Two weeks ago, Julie Esse, about nine months pregnant, looked as if she could turn into a further tragic footnote in Ivory Coast’s bloody conflict.

Instead, her story — with its twist ending — turned out to be some thing O. Henry could possibly have written, with a title about two bags of Sort O negative blood and details about scary guys brandishing Kalashnikovs and machetes.

Esse, 35, a hat and accessories designer, began having what she thought were contractions on April 6, the morning immediately after a mortar blast tore a hole in her family’s Abidjan apartment throughout the siege to capture Laurent Gbagbo, who refused to give up his presidency immediately after Alassane Ouattara was elected.

Esse, who has sickle cell anemia, was caught in a nightmare of airstrikes and sniper fire that turned Abidjan, 1 of Africa’s most modern and prosperous cities, into a war zone practically overnight.

“One day we had been living a peaceful, pleased life as well as the next day people had been becoming shot and killed outside our door,” Esse told AOL News at the time.

  • Jeans are the most universally beloved fashion item on the planet. From grade school slackers to Wall Street venture capitalists, when people can wear anything they want, they usually choose denim.
  • However, not all denim is created equal or for the same purpose. The proletariat staple you’d wear to the farmer’s market is probably not the same pair that you’d wear to the symphony. And, yes, jeans are ubiquitous but not without detractors.
  • There are still critics who object to the renaissance of denim. To them, jeans are for laboring, not socializing. These critics are probably the same population pulling out their hair over the misuse of the word, “literally”; they don’t realize that the battle is lost.
  • If there’s an event where you can wear pants, there is a pair of jeans you can wear. Men have worn jeans to weddings — even grooms. Women have worn jeans to galas and, now … exercise classes.
  • Yes, scoff all you want, but there is a jean for every occasion — skinny, bootcut, trouser, straight leg, boyfriend, flared, wide leg, tapered, jegging, zip ankle, faded, distressed, destroyed, raw. This year, the St. Louis-based Kellwood Co. announced yet another new line of denim aptly (although not euphoniously) christened Democracy Declaration of Jean Dependence.

  • Brett Favre returns to Green Bay as his Minnesota Vikings face his old team the Packers tonight on Sunday Night Football. And with controversy hanging over Favre this month to the point that Saturday Night Live took him to task last night in a sketch which blatantly mocked accusations of him exposing himself by portraying Favre promoting “open-fly jeans” for the sake of making it easier to expose himself.
  • The question now is whether the open-fly joke will make it onto the Sunday Night Football broadcast. SNL and SNF (how’s that for acronyms?) are both on NBC, which means tonight’s football broadcast has the option to feature the sketch if it wants. In fact it did just that last week, when SNL had mocked Sunday Night Football’s opening segment featuring an overlong musical introduction. But tonight may be a trickier call, as it’s a far trickier subject – particularly when the entire Favre mess is still under investigation.

  • “We were so proud of all the children and staff who wore their jeans. It was a good, fun day to raise money for a worth while cause.
  • “We are a new school and will be making Jeans for Genes Day an annual event.”

One of the oldest denim brands in the world, Lee Cooper, is launching a competition for its die-hard fans who love it when their clothes have an exclusive touch. The global 102-year old brand, which now is selling its lines in 85 countries, is encouraging consumers to wear-down their pair of jeans until it acquires exclusive pattern, and then show it to public for a chance to receive nice money. This October, Lee Cooper Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand divisions have teamed up to launch a limited edition Lee Cooper Dry Denim collection, which will be the ‘platform’ for the contest.

The pants made of so-called raw denim can adjust to the body of the person who wears then and over some time gets the color and mold which is truly unique with all the fading, whiskering and creases, which can’t be repeated. The constants are encouraged to buy a pair of Lee Cooper Dry Denim and make photos of the new jeans, register at the www.leecooperchallenge.com website until January 31 to submit the “before” stills. After that they are expected to wear the jeans without washing (if possible) or using any artificial methods that may speed up the natural process of aging for about half a year. Every month they should submit three photos (side, front, back) of their ‘customized’ item plus information on how they treated the item. The visitors to the website can discuss the entries and also read articles about the raw denim.

  • It’s late October, and my children have finally stopped wearing shorts to school.  It’s chilly enough that their legs are cold in the mornings, and they want long pants.
  • My kids are unusual, because most boys I see keep wearing their shorts well into December, unless there’s early snow.
  • There is a benefit to this, because shorts miraculously fit no matter how long the kid has had them.  Pants, however, are outgrown in six months.
  • I took all the hand-me-downs and last year’s pants down from the attic. I wasn’t quite sure what size the boys have grown to be, and after two weeks of trying on pants and one shopping trip to Sears, I still have no idea.
  • My younger son can still fit into one pair of his size 10 jeans, but another size 12 was too small. He has a nice pair of sweat pants, size 8, that fit great. Most of his other pants are a 12, except for the occasional pair of tens. Getting him dressed in the morning is Russian roulette. I keep a bag in his room in which to toss the ones that don’t fit.  It’s almost full.
  • My older son should be about a size 18, but some 16s are still long enough. Other size 16s are way too short, but that doesn’t bother him at all, so he flies off cheerfully to eighth grade, ankles flashing in the sunlight.
  • I took him shopping at Sears and we tried on different styles of jeans in sizes 16, 18, and 20. We ended up with one in each size, all of which fit him nicely.
  • There is an eight-inch height difference between my boys, yet they wear the same size Boy Scout pants and the length seems fine on both of them. I can’t explain the physics that allows this to occur.
